Sunday, February 24th - Linger Lodge, Bradenton, FL Mark and Laura L. met us at our house, so we could ride to the meeting spot together. We were amazed to see the large number of bikes already there. Everyone was so happy to see Mark and Laura and welcomed them with open arms. Due to Mark’s busy off-duty schedule, they hadn’t had the opportunity to attend a ride in quite some time. Paula was so kind to help me count the heads (for my article). It was almost comical! We would get the total number of those on the outside of Burger King, then some would go back inside, while others would come out a different door. Watching all of this activity, I came to a conclusion, that no-one in this group stands still for very long. They move, they mingle, they duck down to put something in the bike bags, they pop back up as people are talking to them! After laughing so hard, Paula and I finally came to the conclusion that they were 19 on the ride (we think!). Gary had the map routed out on the GPS, so he led the ride, while Don took up the rear. As we were lining up and getting into position, we looked over to see Cory trying to get on his bike. Don mentioned on the radio that Cory needed someone to lift him up, so that he could get up on the bike. Jimmy S asked if anyone had a step-ladder, or a pogo stick, so that he could launch up onto the seat! Cory finally got on the bike, and Don pointed out to me that Cory was on his tippy-toes to hold the bike up at a standstill. (We love our Cory!) Gary had mapped out all back roads, 301, 39, etc. Gary was gracious enough to plan stops into his ride, which is so important to some. As the bikes would stop, some would run to get water, others would run to release water, some would stretch their legs, others would stretch their lungs. At one stop, Gary looked with raised eyebrows, wondering where everyone had gone. As it turns out, there was only working toilet (co-ed), so we lined up to wait. This stop, the K-Store in Waumama, was really a high-class establishment, compared to other places we saw along the way. Jimmy S described it as the “Rodeo Drive” of Waumama. At our 2nd stop, Roland and Patti split off, as Patti had a 3 PM commitment! The guys told Roland in the future, to leave Patti home, so he could stay and ride with us! (They were kidding, Patti). J We enjoy Roland’s company as he tends to add so much excitement to a normal ride (flying cement bags that hit him in the nose, stuff like that). As we got further south, it appears that our fearless leader and President and Safety Conscious Instructor, Gary, had some u-turns planned into the route. The further south we went, the more u-turns we seemed to make. Don thought it so cute, the way that Gary snuck those in there. The Blue Knights get motor-training, whether they ask for it, or not. Gary is always encouraging the members to get additional training (“You never get enough training”, Gary will say) and when he realizes they are not seeking training, Gary brings the training to them! After many u-turns, I noticed that the members were really getting better at it, and seemed more comfortable with them! (Slick, Gary!) After numerous u-turns and finally, asking a bicycle rider along the side of the road how to get to Linger Lodge, we arrived at the Restaurant. They were waiting for us, and we were relieved about that. We had told them somewhere between 12 and 12:30, but instead, we arrived close to 1:00 due to all of the u-turn training we squeezed in. (I will say, it was difficult to find the restaurant. It was very much off the beaten path and with the same road name, going two (2) different directions, it only added to the confusion). Another odd point was that the name, Linger Lodge, did not come up on anyone’s GPS. Maybe they didn’t pay their yellow-pages bill! The lodge was very interesting inside, to say the least. There were stuffed everything hanging on the walls and ceilings! There was a sign hanging inside and each word was made from stuffed snakes! There was one of the largest bee-hives I have ever seen, hanging from the ceiling! There were stuffed fish and deer and many animal skulls lined up in a row! There were even stuffed squirrels playing different sports! One was golfing, while another was playing baseball and our most favorite, the stuffed squirrel playing basketball! These stuffed items were a great conversation piece and we were sorry our photographer, Joe E was not present, as these stuffed pieces made some great photo opportunities! Gary J was particularly sad that Joe E was not present. Gary, who was always served last at restaurants, if even at all, passed his bad luck on to Joe E, who now notoriously gets served last, even when he orders first! With Joe not being present, the served last thing was shifted right back Gary’s way! His order was taken first, but lo & behold, he was served just as we were finishing our meals! Laura noticed it right away, that Gary had not been served, and commented that she remembered that, so long ago riding with us, how Gary never got his food! We had a great meal and I was relieved no-one ordered the weird items listed: Alligator, Alligator gumbo, Alligator bites. Don did order the normal gumbo – still looking for that taste of New Orleans/Mississippi which he experienced last fall at the SRC in New Orleans. The food was great, the price was right, the service was great and all in all, we had a super day shared with hungry friends! We all hit 75 north and headed home. Saturday, February 23, 2008- Ten Chapter XVII members braved the potential rain and attended the 2nd Annual Fallen Hero’s Memorial Ride in Sarasota. Seven of us met at 7:00 AM at the Raceway gas station in Riverview. Uncle Al was waiting for us at the Cracker Barrel and heard me call him over the CB as we were reaching the Cracker Barrel exit. Without having to stop, Uncle Al fell right into formation as the tail-gunner, on I-75 south at Exit 220. When we arrived at the staging area (Sprint office complex), just off Beneva Road, in Sarasota; we were joined by 400 motorcycle riders from various law enforcement agencies and law enforcement motorcycle clubs from around the State. After registering and having coffee and (off-course) donuts, the ride began. Lead by a local TV station’s boom camera truck, America’s Most Wanted Host John Walsh and approximately 30 uniformed motor officers that included our very own Blue Knight Honor Guard of Rick Rutel and Steve Kane; we proceeded on a 50 mile ride through the beautiful roads of Sarasota County. Every intersection was blocked to allow us to comfortably view the breathtaking estates and horse farms. A Sarasota County Sheriff’s helicopter escorted us from the air. It was a beautiful ride. Mother Nature provides us with beautiful weather while keeping the rain to the north. After the ride there was a BBQ lunch and as a privilege of being Blue Knights, we were in the front of the line for the ride and luckily for the lunch as well. After lunch Steve McDermott, Uncle Al, AJ Suarez and I decided to forgo the presentations ceremony and head home. Our hope was to miss the heavy rain coming in from off the gulf. The ride up I-75 was uneventful until Uncle Al called over the CB that his engine was sputtering and he was pulling off the road. Fortunately, Uncle Al’s problem was temporary and he was able to drive through the heavy rain in Pinellas and make it home. Steve and I hit the rain near on Hwy 301 in Riverview. Luckily we were close to home and didn’t get to wet. I’m sure AJ caught the rain on I-75 near Gibsonton. All in all is was a wonderful experience joining Blue Knight chapters XVIII and XVI, to remember the 16 Florida Law Enforcement officers killed in the Line of Duty in 2007. I am very happy to have attended this event and hope that more Chapter XVII members join us again next year. I would like to say a special “Thank You” to Rick Robbins who had to leave his house at 5:45 AM, to ride down to Riverview and meet us. DD.

Saturday -
!5 members, good size group since we had another group at the Fallen
Heroes Ride in Sarasota, met at CMS for Saturday breakfast. It was
another one of those days where the weather didn't know what it wanted
to do (rain or be sunny). It was raining in the mountains so we were in
the car along with Joe E. who was getting his bike serviced everyone
else was on their bikes. The group decided to go to Eve's in Oldsmar
(one of the best places on the list) because we haven't been there in
some time, as usual they welcomed us and had a large table ready.
Service was a little slow this morning because the restaurant was full
with a waiting line down the front of the building, but the quality and
quantity of food made up for that. It was Vic's birthday today and he
thought we forgot about, but he was so wrong, after we were done eating
we surprised him with a beautiful Chapter XVII rendition of Happy
Birthday. It was time to leave and guess what, the weather made up it's
mind - HARD RAIN. Til next time------------(ed-BS)
Saturday February 16 - 21 of us met for the Saturday morning breakfast ride. It was a typical Florida morning (sunny and beautiful!), yet a few of us brought our sports cars instead of the bikes. Some of us have very busy lives and with working full-time, have to try to get a lot into any bit of time-off. Bruce and Teresa had a party to attend after the scheduled SRC planning meeting, which was scheduled after breakfast. Don and I had to run to the store and needed the trunk room of the Miata for the purchases. Actually, the Miata trunk isn’t that much larger than the Goldwing trunk! It was like déjà-vu, to stand around and admire Rick R’s new BMW motorcycle (I feel like I’ve been here before). Rick was so happy to show it off to us, as he has so many times in the past. We figured out that Rick feels dedicated to the 3 large manufactures of bikes, BMW, Harley Davidson and Honda and switches them around every 6 months so that they can each benefit from his purchases. The sports car drivers went straight to the Country Harvest Restaurant, while the bikes did a little loopdie-loop around the area, not knowing if the Restaurant would be ready for the large crowd of 21. Bruce, Teresa, Don and I went and got seated at the reserved area which was back in the corner. We wondered how some would fit their tummies in the back row, where the space was somewhat limited. As the riders entered, Don warned that there was a weight limit in the back row, like lining up for a ride at an Amusement Park. Rick R proudly stated that because he had lost 7 lbs, his tummy had shrunk, so he could easily fit into the tight-squeezed area. He commented that at this stage in his life, his age, IQ and waist size, were all the exact same: 51! Rick sat near Don, Gary and I and talk about entertainment! Rick R really is a funny guy! Bruce asked Rick if he had a copy of last week’s breakfast article, so that he could reference what he had said last week, so that he wouldn’t be repeating the same stories. Bruce, Don and us girls had ordered before the others arrived, to help the cook out before being slammed with 21 orders and we were glad we did. We seemed to wait a long time for the food to come out. It was okay though, because Rick entertained us while we waited. Rick had a hard time getting his food and threatened that he would leave soon and go to McDonalds to get breakfast. Bruce reminded him that it was too late, that McDonalds quit serving at 10:30, so he was stuck. His food finally arrived, but it was still goofed up. Gary released a sigh of relief, to know that he had received his food and he wasn’t the one waiting, as normally is the case. We looked down the table at Joe E, who was starving and had no food in sight. Gary mentioned that because of their close-working relationship (President versus Vice-President), that perhaps the curse had been passed over. The food was good and the conversation was hysterically funny. We ate our food and then, many of us headed to Peter D’s house for the SRC Planning Committee Meeting. Others went on their way, probably to Harley Davidson for their free hamburger lunch. Until we eat again (and Lord knows, that will be sooner than later), Karen Lumpkin Ride Reporter
February 10th, Sunday -
Many of us met at BK at 9 AM for the special ride to Sarasota to have
our bikes blessed, courtesy of BK FL XVIII. You remember, they had come
to one of our monthly meetings a few months back to advertise this
event.
It was a chilly morning, sunny and pretty, but cool, with the
occasional wind-drifts. I announced to Don that I would have to wear my
chaps, to stay warm.
We arrived at BK and could not believe the amount of riders!!!!
Several times, I tried to count the heads for my article, but the heads
never stood still, so it was virtually impossible! I will say this,
though, there were a LOT of them!
Gary, our fearless leader, led the group while Bruce took the
tail. (Bruce likes tails, I'm thinking!) I thought, as I looked at
Gary leading so many bikes (were there 26?), that was so neat! Gary,
our president, leading his chapter down south! Nice!
The ride was smooth and concise with Gary and Bruce
communicating along the way, requesting lane-changes, warning of merging
vehicles, etc.
The ride across the Skyway Bridge was a windy one, to say the
least! We held on tight and made our way across and at the end of the
bridge, Gary checked with Bruce on a headcount, to be sure we hadn't
lost anyone in the "cross draft".
We noticed flying debris along the way, especially on the other
side of the bridge, going into Manatee County. At one point, those in
the front, pointed to a large bag in one of the lanes. As we all went
by it, a draft was formed and the bag, a cement bag to be exact, went
airborne and came crashing down on Roland, smashing him in the face!
Apparently, this bag had some left over chunks of hardened cement inside
and no doubt, flew out of someone's truck bed.
Just then, Bruce announced that he and Joe E. would be falling
out, to follow Roland, who was bleeding profusely from his nose where he
had taken the hit. Roland explained later, that he wondered if he was
bleeding from his nose, which was confirmed as Joe and Marie got close.
He said that Marie's mouth flew open and she looked horrified when she
looked over at him. He knew then that it must have been a bad looking
injury. Joe E duct-taped Roland's nose, to hold it together until they
could get to the meeting spot, where he could then call for an emergency
vehicle to render aid.
As we rode towards our destination, Juan and Eli Santos (and a
friend of Juan's), jumped in and joined our group. We arrived and
noticed a great turnout of bikes already lined up with their groups! We
even caught sight of Claude and Steve K, who had rode directly to the
meeting spot in Sarasota, versus meeting at BK. We noticed a beautiful
brand new 1800 Goldwing driven by our own Tricky Dick!!! Way to go
Dick! Congratulations.

Saturday -
18 members and 1 guest met at the rendezvous (CMS) to do the Saturday
morning eating thing. The morning was very cloudy, but the weather
forecasters said it was going to be a great day with temperatures in the
low 70's (since they get paid much more then we do, they must be right).
It was decided to go to the Golden Corral in Largo (big group, big
buffet). Instead of going down US 19 and then west on Ulmerton, we took
the back roads to make a ride out of the trip. We arrived at the
restaurant and proceeded to eat, even though there was a line at the
omelet station and you had to wait forever for bacon, we managed to find
something to eat (except danish for desert). After breakfast most
everyone headed off to do their own thing, while a few of us stayed for
the lunch buffet so we would get our money's worth. Til next

February 02, Saturday - 21 members met at CMS on what was a beautiful, clear, cool, Groundhog Day. After morning hellos and a visit from my daughter and my 4 grand kids, the call was made to Doe Doe's in Bay Pines and we were told come on down, so we went. When we arrived we found nothing was done to prepare for us, we were told sit wherever you can, so we were all over the restaurant in small groups and not really able to socialize. After breakfast everyone went there own way, the biggest group going to Safety Harbor to escort DD and SM to the Hill's home, then the rest of us went for a ride across town so Don could buy stuff at the D2 dealer from there we headed home except T and I had to stop at Gulf Coast HD so I could get a kick stand bumper and (of course) a burger or two.
